Members of this family typically thrive in the tropical latitudes, especially those of North and South America. Approximately 1,300 species are known. Small to medium in size, metalmarks vary widely in their patterns, behavior, and postures. Males have reduced front legs that are not used for walking, and females have three pairs of walking legs. Adults usually perch with their wings spread open or cocked slightly, while many tropical species habitually perch upside down on large leaves. Monarch Butterfly Predators Millions of Monarch Butterflies become food for various predators every year. Besides their life cycle being very short, especially in the warmer months, their fragile wings are very susceptible to water. Even a few drops of the morning dew can be hazardous, and in colder weather wing icing (like aircraft) can be disastrous! There are a multitude of little predators that eat the Monarch eggs and larvae such as ants, mites, spiders, and wasps. The adult monarchs are especially vulnerable to being eaten by predators while at the winter migratory sites where their population density is incredibly large, and the over-wintering time cooler weather causes them to be in a semi-dormant state making them easy to catch prey. Butterfly Fish The butterflyfish are a group of conspicuous tropical marine fish of the family Chaetodontidae; the bannerfish and coralfish are also included in this group. Found mostly on the reefs of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, there are approximately 120 species in 10 genera[1]. A number of species pairs occur in the Indian and Pacific oceans, members of the huge genus Chaetodon. Butterflyfish look like smaller versions of angelfish (Pomacanthidae) but unlike these lack preopercle spines at the gill covers. Some members of the genus Heniochus resemble the Moorish Idol (Zanclus cornutus) of the monotypic Zanclidae. Among the paraphyletic "Perciformes", the former are probably not too distantly related to butterflyfish, whereas the Zanclidae seem far less close. Butterfly Fish

Butterfly Cupcakes from: http://www.taste.com.au/recipes/20340/butterfly+cupcakes Ingredients : * 1 quantity Basic cupcakes (see related recipe) * 1 cup raspberry jam * 300ml thickened cream, whipped * icing sugar mixture, to decorate Method Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced oven. Line two 12-hole, 1/3 cup-capacity muffin pans with paper cases. Make Basic cupcakes (see related recipe). Using a sharp knife, cut a 2cm-deep x 3cm-wide piece from top of each cake. Cut tops in half. Spoon 2 teaspoons jam into each hole. Spoon cream over jam. Arrange cake tops over cream to form wings. Dust with icing sugar. Serve. Notes For 1/3 cup-capacity muffin pans use 2 level tablespoons of mixture. Bake for 15 to 17 minutes. Stand cakes in pans for 2 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
